BRIDGE COLLAPSES ON MUMBAI GOA HIGHWAY

An old bridge on the Mumbai Goa highway near Mahad in Raigad district  collapsed in Savitri river , it is said that along with few vehicles two State Transport buses coming from Jaigadh to Mumbai and Rajapur to Borivali also fell in the river . There is no news of any survivor so far as the Saviitri river is also swelling due to heavy rains because of  which the search operation is also becoming difficult .

The bridge was built during the British era , the British government had also sent a letter two years back to the Maharashtra government informing that the life of this bridge is over and it needs urgent attention , the news to this effect was also published in Lokmat marathi daily newspaper .

National Disaster Response Force ( NDRF ) is pressed into service for the rescue operation with three teams comprising of over 50 persons for the rescue , almost 22 people are missing in the mishap which took place around 11.30 pm on Tuesday . However , NDRF is also finding it difficult to carry on the rescue operations due to very heavy rains in the region .
